Uwezo Rheumatology Foundation is a society registered in kenya under section 10 of societies Act( cap 108) with its operation dating February, 2016. The Foundation is a collaborative think-tank of Kenyan, Swedish, UK Rheumatologists as well as patients and researchers to bridge the glaring critical gap in provision of musculoskeletal healthcare services through introduction and supplementation of Rheumatological skills in rural communities which are synonymous with inadequate or lack of proper healthcare services. This grand dream was anchored on one of the government’s big 4 agenda (Universal Health Coverage) and sustainable development goal 3 (health for all in sync and tandem with WHO Alma-Ata Declaration of 1978 as well as Bamako initiative 1987) whereas modelled from the primary healthcare pillars thereby informing its vision of promoting high quality of life among people with musculoskeletal conditions siring the mission of playing a leading role in ensuring decent living for those affected. Musculoskeletal conditions affect all aspects of people’s lives and have significant socioeconomic impact thus access to early diagnosis, effective treatment and rehabilitation enables those affected to maintain their mobility, work and have good quality of life. Regardless of rheumatologic and musculoskeletal diseases being a leading and a growing cause of mortality and disability in sub-saharan africa there is still scanty epidemiologic data to expose the true burden thus need for investment on research moreover this situation is worsened by high cost of medicine training, unavailability of the rheumatology specialty training in Kenya, prioritisation of other diseases( Tuberculosis,HIV,malaria and COVID-19 et al) ,shortage of skilled professionals ( unmet standard of WHO 20 doctors to 100,000 people) and indeed inadequate health financing( against the abuja declaration of 15% national budget). Despite the impact of musculoskeletal conditions on health, social and economic wellbeing in Kenya and Africa at large, services for musculoskeletal health conditions are extremely under resourced worsening the worst thus the foundation has volunteered itself to be the savior in the gruelling predicament by improving access to musculoskeletal healthcare at local level in communities across Kenya through development of a sustainable program to raise knowledge and skills of health professionals working in community in the early detection, diagnosis and management of musculoskeletal conditions.
So far the foundation through its philanthropic efforts of creating Rheumatologic awareness to patients, sensitization of rheumatology healthcare providers on evidence based management, local research on musculoskeletal conditions and preventive model on musculoskeletal conditions have managed to train over 500 (patients and healthcare providers) in more than 10 stations in Kenya thus improving care outcomes, health seeking behaviour and musculoskeletal health research at grass root levels through its slogan of “Afya Bora sio Bora Afya mashinani”.
