In Understanding Arthritis, Dr. Oyoo makes a spirited effort to demystify a disease many of his clients-and most Africans-are only now coming to terms with its destructive impact if left unattended. In simple language, he talks about arthritis in children, Rheumatoid arthritis, Reactive arthritis, Osteoarthritis, Gout, and Lupus.
What you find in this book is a case of how each type of arthritis presents, its diagnosis, its treatment, the foods required for its management and education. Life can be lived better by understanding how this disease behaves!

In this simplified book, I want to share with you my discoveries about Back Pain. The journey to understanding it has been long and tried my patience, but I can now say, after most of my patients’ positive feedback, that it is well worth it.
That said, I do not want people to wait until they have become nearly incapacitated like Professor Maiyo did before they see a doctor – there are steps we can each take in our daily life to minimize chances of experiencing Back Pain. So, what you will find in this book is a discussion on:
Each man and woman were placed in this world by the creator to accomplish a certain goal. Accomplishing that goal may be made impossible by the egregious pain backache causes. That’s why it is our goal to create a world in which Back Pain is a disease that we all can manage and live with positively once we have it.

Rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases are a leading and growing cause of morbidity and disability worldwide. Although epidemiological data on the incidence and prevalence of Rheumatic diseases in African countries remain sparse, evidence is slowly emerging to suggest that the burden of disability and mortality associated with these disorders ,previously neglected and believed to be uncommon in Africa, may be greater in low and Middle -income countries than in those with more developed economies in Asia ,Australia, Europe and North America. Across the continent ,but especially in sub- saharan Africa ,Rheumatologists are few and far between, and access to specialist care is restricted .Because education and knowledge relating to Rheumatic diseases among healthcare providers are lacking in much of Africa ,diagnosis of Rheumatic and musculoskeletal disorders is frequently overlooked or delayed .
The scope and practice of medicine across Africa has however changed significantly in the last two decades as infectious diseases have become better controlled, life expectancy has improved, and the prevalence of non- communicable diseases has increased. In concert with a new and wider focus of concern for patients with chronic diseases education ,training and healthcare for patients with Rheumatic and musculoskeletal disorders has progressed considerably in urban settings in some of the countries of North and South Africa.
